MAI Capital Management Names Matt Barthel as Managing Partner, Strategic Advisor Recruiting

Longtime Barron's leader and recruiting “triple threat’ with ties to RIAs and wirehouse and sports-focused advisors joins MAI to augment national advisor recruiting efforts.

CLEVELAND – October 12, 2026 –MAI Capital Management ("MAI"), a registered investment advisor (RIA) focused on empowering clients to simplify, protect, and grow their wealth, today announced it has hired Matt Barthel, who will join as a Managing Partner, Strategic Advisor Recruiting. He will be charged with driving inorganic business development initiatives to expand MAI’s reach across the United States and grow the firm’s network of financial advisors.

Barthel brings nearly 35 years of experience in journalism and 20 years of experience in wealth-management data operations to MAI, including roles at Barron’s where he oversaw the outlet’s industry-leading financial advisor rankings. As MAI continues its nationwide expansion following its majority investment from Carlyle, Barthel will be instrumental in the firm’s efforts to identify and onboard new advisor teams that share MAI’s client-first culture.

Barthel will report directly to Managing Partner Jim Kacic and work alongside the firm’s Business Development team to drive strategic growth in key markets, with a particular focus on advisor lift-outs.
